Title: Structure and function of bacterial amyloid surface structures

Most bacteria produce various surface structures of importance for bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. The aim of this project is to reveal structure and function of amyloid surface structures, primarily fibrils, in a number of environmental and medical biofilms containing microorganisms from various taxonomic groups. Special emphasis is on the amyloids produced by various species of Pseudomonas where amyloid production and regulation is studied with expression systems.

Title: Identification and characterization of microorganism causing fouling in MBR reactors

The aim is to identify and characterize microorganisms causing fouling in MBR reactors. Focus is on the EBPR process. In situ methods and -omics based methods will applied.

Title: Identification and characterization of extracellular components in the fouling layer in MBR reactors

The aim is to identify and characterize extracellular components and link these to the microbial producers from the fouling layer in MBR reactors. Focus is on the EBPR process and systems detoxifying micropollutants. In situ methods and –omics based methods will applied.
