According to Dean Mogens Rysholt Poulsen, the appointment of Kim Lambertsen Larsen as Head of Department for Chemistry & Bioscience is good news for both the department's continuity and the ambitions for further development. The dean is delighted to recruit a strong profile from the university's ranks.

Af David Graff, ENGINEERING Dean Secretariat

Kim Lambertsen Larsen is Professor of Applied Supramolecular Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry & Bioscience, and he has worked at Aalborg University since 1994. This means that he knows the research, the staff, the department and the university when he takes on his new role on 1. September.

The Department of Chemistry & Bioscience has been through a good development. The economy is solid, and the level of research is impressive. Kim has long been a factor within research, education and management at the department, so he is equipped well to carry on the positive trend and bring the department to the next level nationally and internationally.

Knows AAU inside out

On Kim Lambertsen Larsen's AAU track record are roles such as Head of Section, Deputy Head of Department, Acting Head of Department, Program Manager for the department's PhD programs, Research Area Manager, member of the Consultation Committee and responsible for the implementation of the first year of study for the department's programs.

- In addition, throughout my career here, I have been involved in the community and taken an active role in the development of the workplace, he explains.

As a leader, Kim Lambertsen Larsen stands for transparency and involvement. As he sees it, transparency must ensure that the management's decisions are understood, while the involvement must allow employees to help develop and take ownership of the department's future.

It is also important for me to be thorough and to familiarize myself with things before I present my view. So I want to involve, systematize, coordinate and spend time understanding the full picture before I suggest changes.

No fire - only opportunities

Kim Lambertsen Larsen is preparing for the fact that the task as Head of Department is about continuing success and adjusting the department to the future, rather than putting out fires.

It is a well-functioning department with competent employees, a strong community, high-quality education programs and world-class research, of which I will be the leader. But we must be able to navigate the challenges ahead – for example, declining student cohorts and the need for increased absorption of external funds. The department's finances must keep up with what is happening in society so that we remain robust.

Along the same line, Dean Mogens Rysholt Poulsen emphasizes the importance of having a sharp eye for the development perspective:

The department's strong foundation is a perfect starting point for taking new steps. We must not be satisfied by just keeping up the good work - we must be ambitious and constantly raise the bar in both research and education and also concerning the day-to-day operations. That development can and must grow out of the institute's culture and history, which Kim exemplifies.
