Young Membrane Innovator First to Receive Special Grant

Lagt online: 14.11.2022

PhD student Xianzheng Ma is the first from Aalborg University to receive the Spin-outs Denmark translational postdoc grant.

A young talent at Department of Chemistry & Bioscience has received an important aknowledgement and support of his innovative research as a PhD student.

Xianzheng Ma is the first from Aalborg University to receive the Spin-outs Denmark translational postdoc grant for the new membrane technology "FiBrane".

What is a membrane?

Membranes are like sieves, with micro or nano-sized pores on them.

For water treatment, small water molecules can go through the pores, while the larger pollutants molecules or ions can be retained by the membrane.

Fibrane is a technology that can potentially both reduce pollution and reinvigorate the circular business sector, and it is rare for PhD students to receive this kind of support.

Xianzheng Ma receives the grant to further develop his entrepreneurial skills and business competences as well as maturing the new membrane technology.

Watch a video from AAU Innovation where Xianzheng Ma presents the technology.

FiBrane is a membrane distillation technology aiming for zero liquid discharge (ZLD) applications. FiBrane consists of cheap inorganic fibers, which are made super-hydrophobic to work in a membrane distillation process.

When FiBrane is ready for market it is a product that will be able to recover clean water and valuable materials from wastewater streams, and thereby help industries to implement a circular economy approach in their production lines.

What are the end prospects of the Fibrane product?

FiBrane has the potential to separate wastewater into freshwater and solid waste completely, achieving what professionals call Zero Liquid Discharge.
